What is the Challenge Cup?

The Challenge Cup is English and European Rugby League's highest level cup competition. First played in 1897 between winners Batley (now Batley Bulldogs) and St Helens, the Challenge Cup is one of the most prestigious trophies in the sport of Rugby League.

The knockout tournament is open to professional, semi professional and amateur teams, English and Welsh professional members must play in the tournament, with amateur and foreign teams invited to play each year. Amateur teams from Scotland and Serbia have recently entered into the early rounds of the competition, with Canadian and French professional sides also entering at later rounds.

The knockout rounds of the cup take place from January to August, with the Final held at London's Wembley Stadium in August in front of thousands of fans.

The most successful team in the tournament are Wigan Warriors, with 19 trophies, this years finalists St Helens are the 3rd most successful with 12 wins and Castleford Tigers are lower down in 11th place with 4 wins.

It should be a fantastic spectacle, pitting two of this decades best teams against each other in the winner takes all final.

Best of luck to both teams!
